Thriving Through Holiday Stress

holiday blues depressionLet’s be honest, holidays are not always happy. Forced gatherings, missing loved ones, and financial stress can be the perfect recipe for holiday stress. Luckily, Inspire Hope Blog has the support you need to thrive through the holidays!

Holiday Thriving Guide:

  • Be realistic: No gathering, holiday or family is perfect. Holiday movies and shopping ads are not reality! Take a deep breath, laugh and delight in imperfections.
  • Don’t give in to holiday pressures: There is no rule that you need to wear a Santa hat, sing merrily, or play jingle bells. Feel free to decline an invitation or leave an event if you aren’t comfortable. Be willing to tell others, “I’m not up for this right now” if needed.
  • Honor who is with you: Depression laser focuses on lost loved ones during the holidays. Try to focus on appreciating and honoring who is still with you.
  • Serve others: Lose yourself in the service of others! Volunteer at a soup kitchen, organize a gift drive or simply help a neighbor dig snow out of their driveway.
  • Get out: Plan an outing instead of spending the holidays at home. Enjoy the adventure and possible new tradition!
  • Make moderation your best friend: Avoid binge eating, drinking and spending by setting clear boundaries for yourself. Examples include: 1 plate, 1 drink and $__ per gift MAX. If you do not set a plan, intentions fade and regret creeps in.

What to do if you are financially stressed:
While you might not have money to give, you have caring to give! You have no idea how much joy you can spread by giving your time, interest and support to those you care about.

What to do if you are alone:
Find a church or community group in your area that has special events for singles. Go to these events with an open mind. Relinquish judgments and enjoy meeting new people!

What to do if you are having suicidal thoughts:
If your feelings of depression during the holidays are accompanied by suicidal thoughts, call 911, immediately proceed to a hospital emergency room, or contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).
